The present quality assurance mathods in sub-assembly and assembly operations are based on statistical process control (SPC) for which accurate and high speed data capture and procesing is required. In care body assembly coordinate measuring machines and dedicated fixtures are extensively used with low sample rate capability. Non-contact laser based measuring systems are also in operation providing 100 % sample rate with excellent processing speed which allows for in-line integration . Due to the cost implication such systems are limited to use in large vehicle asembly installations to monitor near complete assemblies. The paper proposes intermediate strategies between complete in-line systems and dedicated fixture based off-line measuring systems. A sensor based off-line system has been developed with robotised part loading, part unloading and automatic part clamping facilities. The cell incorporates a moving Perceptron Datacam measuring, data capture and analysis system. The cell provides an increased sample rate and it is envisaged that when the sample rate approaches the required 100 % level, the cell can be incorporated into the assembly line.
