The development of a Field Data Acquisition Unit (FDAU) for the measurement of the motions of a Standby Vessel the 'Grampian Protector' whilst on station at Total's North Alwyn Platform is described. The FDAU incorporates: strapped down accelerometers and rate gyros, a fluxgate compass and differential global positioning. Once installed the unit is capable of continuous data recording for up to eleven weeks with the data stored and retrieved via a removable hard disk. The technological developments behind modern offshore motion measurement systems are reviewed. The design of the FDAU is described with operational experience discussed and the necessary transformations from the raw FDAU data to 6DOF motion records outlined. Samples of the measured vessel responses are presented for data recorded whilst on standby operations at the North Alwyn oil and gas platform in the northern North Sea during the winter of 1996/97.
