The prediction of seakeeping behaviour is an integral part of the ship design process. Many vessels require good seakeeping ability in order to fulfil their designated function: crews on patrol boats need to be able to continue working effectively as weather deteriorates; fishing vessels need to provide a stable platform for operating in rough seas; passenger ferries need to maintain the well being and good health of their passengers when sailing in poor weather. The two main techniques for predicting the seakeeping characteristics of a prospective design are computer modelling and tank testing. However designers rarely obtain quantitative feedback on the seakeeping behaviour of their vessels once built and may not be aware of the merits or drawbacks of the prediction techniques employed. Model tests are usually viewed by designers as the ideal method for predicting seakeeping behaviour and are often utilised by researchers to validate computer codes. However, scale effects and non-linearities may detract from their accuracy when compared with full scale tests. The primary aim of this study was to conduct full scale motions measurements on a vessel and investigate their correlation with model test results and computer predictions. Through this work conclusions may be drawn on the appropriateness of conducting model tests and computer predictions in the design process to determine seakeeping characteristics.
