Traditionally, the manoeuvring and seakeeping of a vessel travelling in a seaway are predicted using experimental and/or theoretical techniques. The mathematical model adopted in manoeuvring theory has its basis in a fixed body axis system whereas seakeeping theory is founded on an equilibrium axis system which translates with the steady forward speed of the vessel but does not experience its parasitic motions. On the whole, the developed techniques have remained relatively unchanged over the years with seakeeping and manoeuvring theories approached from separate viewpoints and therefore the interaction and synergy between seakeeping and manoeuvring approaches have been practically ignored. This paper discusses and demonstrates the acquisition of experimental data necessary for inclusion in a unified mathematical model encompassing both manoeuvring and seakeeping theories to describe the behaviour of a vessel travelling in a seaway. This has prompted the development of innovative experimental techniques using a Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism (HPMM) and a Vertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM). The HPMM mechanism has been modified to allow for a far wider range of experiments than initially conceived. These are briefly discussed together with their implications in the context of experimental ship model testing in seakeeping and manoeuvring theories.
