The use of a PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) system consisting of a high speed shutter camera and a continuous wave laser as light source in wind tunnel experiments is discussed. PTV measurements around an open wheel and a front wing of a formula one racing car are described in which specially designed large hollow spheres were used as seeding particles. The use of a continuous wave laser offers considerable advantages in qualitative visualisation of the flow as strings of particles can easily be seen and followed. The measurements results show that the PTV system gives good quantitative measurements in a wind tunnel with wind speeds up to 50 m/s. Special care has to be taken with the seeding system and with the provision of optical access to the measurement zones.
