Icing has been recognized as a very dangerous phenomenon since first aircraft flights, and numerous accidents have occurred because of ice formation. The understanding of ice accretion on unprotected airfoils, engine intakes, etc., is very important both from the point of view of aircraft design as well as at certification, for the resultant aerodynamic and performance degradation effects. The present work describes experiments conducted in a conventional wind tunnel on NACA 0012 airfoils with simulated rime and glaze ice, using LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) to measure the flow around the modified airfoils. The alterations fo the flow field lead to important changes in its aerodynamic characteristics.
