Laser velocimetry was used to measure unsteady velocities, due to pump and turbine blade interactions, in the pump-turbine interface of two automotive torque converters with different diameters. Results from two pump-turbine speed ratios are reported in this paper. Several specific observations can be made. First, as a general rule the unsteady fluctuations are stronger in the turbine inlet plane than in the pump exit plane due to the pump-turbine blade interactions regardless of geometry. This is the result of the turbine being directly downstream of the 'jet-wake' generated by the pump.
