The global car component supplier LucasVarity has developed the first electric power assisted steering system capable for use in volume production under the name EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering). The key advantage of electric power assisted steering is based on the small additional fuel consumption of only 0.5 % compared with manual steering systems. Electro-hydraulic systems on the other hand cause the fuel consumption to increase by 4 %, and full hydraulic systems by on average 6 %. When produced in large numbers, LucasVarity considers that the manufacturing costs of EPAS will be comparable to those of conventional hydraulic power assisted steering.
