To decrease the fuel consumption of the vehicles, one of the most efficient methods is to reduce their weight. Aluminium is a promising material to achieve this goal. The main problems to be solved concern the industrial manufacturing of the aluminium cars, especially the joining aspects. The paper reports the main results of the studies carried out in the BRITE Project 'Low Weight Vehicle' (Manufacturing Aspect of Body Structures - MABS). Four aluminium alloys and adhesives were evaluated for different adhesive gaps, surface texture and treatments. The static and impact behaviour, using simple specimens, was assessed and general rules for the bonding aluminium parts was defined. The technical activities performed confirm that the aluminium alloy can be bonded with conventional adhesives, the mechanical properties of the bonded joints are good and convenient for the automotive applications. The adhesive formulation plays an important role just like as the allowance (gap) in the joints.
