Conventional clearcoat technologies are discussed in regard to their crosslinking mechanism. DMA studies of the crosslinking process at different temperatures have been performed for each clearcoat system. The results give insight into the different crosslinking mechanisms. NMR studies of the reaction of malonate-blocked and acetoacetate-blocked polyisocyanates with OH-functional compounds show differences in the reaction mechanism of the two blocking agents which might be important concerning the durability of such crosslinked clearcoats.
