This article presents the contents of a lecture, held by Dr. Andy Norris, technical director of leading navigation specialist Kelvin Hughes. This lecture deals with the state of the art and the prospects of the unmanned ship. The global satellite navigation systems, electronic charts, developmemts of the new Automatic Identification System (AIS) as a complement to ARPA and of advanced software such as incorporating the Collision Regulations into software of a level sufficient to make intelligent judgements and able to act in seamanlike manner and the development of the Collision Avoidance Advice System by Kelvin Hughes allows the conclusion that the unmanned ship ist possible within the next 20 years
