The first cruise liner propelled by electric azimuthing thrusters has been delivered by Kvaerner Masa Helsinki yard. These thrusters are attractive to the shipowner because the positioning the motors outside the hull increases cargo carring capacity by up to 20 percent, stern thrusters can be deleted as can rudders and manoeuvrability is improved. The Carnival Cruise Line is the first cruise operator to specify azimuthing thruster propulsion. Its newbuildings "Elation" and "Paradise" will each be propelled by two 14MW units built by Kvaerner Masas Azipod division. Further details andadvantages of this propulsion system are presented in this article
