In February 1997, Birmingham Accident Research Centre initiated a feasibility study to determine the practicability and likely benefits of a real-world Pedestrian Accident Study. This project was sponsored by the UK's Co-operative Crash Injury Study (CCIS). There are approximately 2500 police reported pedestrian casualties in the West Midlands region every year, so the data required for the project is geografically local to the University of Birmingham. The paper reviews the scope and findings of this preliminary study. Data collection techniques and the methodology for a proposed future study are presented, together with an outline of the possible uses of an in-depth database detailing pedestrian accident circumstances, vehicle damage and subsequent injuries.
