This paper is concerned with the application of developmant techniques applied to vehicles to produce a pedestrian friendly vehicle. The assessment criteria for pedestrian collisions are detailed in proposals currently being circulated in the EC and are summarised in this paper. Development strategies are discussed with some solutions and problems that will have to be overcome in order to develop a suitable vehicle. These methods and tools are reviewed through experience gained at MIRA working with vehicle manufacturers. This paper provides information for engineers in both vehicle manufacturing and component supplier organisations concerned with developing vehicles to meet these proposals.
