Airbags are a proven lifesaving technology. They have saved more than 2000 lives since the mid-1980s. The downside is the number of adults and children who have sustained serious and fatal injuries from inflating airbags. This experience will lead to significant improvements in airbag technology. Some improvements - for example, dual deployment thresholds, reduced energy inflators, and advanced folding patterns - are already in some new cars, and they promise to reduce the risk from airbags while still preserving the benefits. Further improvements will reduce the risks even further. In the meantime, US efforts will continue to address the behavioural problem - failure to use belts or child restraints and improper positioning - through laws and education.
