The application of an active LeanNOx catalyst system provides an attractive technical concept for future diesel engine concepts using common rail fuel injection systems. Although the NOx reduction potential achievable today does not reach the level which can be figured out for SCR systems it is worth working intensively on this technology as catalyst manufacturers put high effort into further increasing the NOx conversion potential of the catalysts. The results of joint development work of RENAULT and FEV Motorentechnik described in this paper point out the potential of active LeanNOx catalyst systems which are in development today under real engine operating conditions. The following conclusions can be drawn from this work: The NOx reduction potential achievable today with an active LeanNOx catalyst system can be figured out in a range up to 20 % under real vehicle operating conditions. Due to a high number of influencing parameters which are partly linked, optimization and calibration already are multidimensional problems which require new ideas and solutions. Engine, powertrain and exhaust gas aftertreatment have to be understood and treated as an integrated system in order to achieve the best possible solution for a clean diesel engine concept.
