Fixed-bed atmospheric pressure pyrolysis and nitrogen swept pyrolysis experiments at temperatures between 400 deg C and 700 deg C were conducted on cotton seed cake to determine the possibility of being a potential source of renewable fuel and chemical foodstock. The effects of heating rate, pyrolysis atmosphere and pyrolysis temperature on oil yield and quality were examined. 1.H-NMR analysis of the liquid products was applied to assess the extent of aromatization of the cellulosic structure during pyrolysis. Oil yields of 24 % and 27 % were obtained for atmospheric pyrolysis and pyrolyis under nitrogen atmosphere, respectively, at a final pyrolysis temperature of 550 deg C and a heating rate of 7 deg C.min-1, and a maximum oil yield of 27 % was obtained under nitrogen atmosphere. This small difference could be attributed to the low bulk density and the high oxygen content of cotton seed cake. The aromaticity of the oil was found to be very low. The H/C ratios and simulated distillation curves showed that the fractions obtained during pyrolysis are quite similar to currently used transport fuels.
