Despite the many ways in which computers help in the design process, car stylists still prefer to use sketches on paper for the early, conceptual stages of design, and for good reasons. CAD systems are very helpful in detailing a design, but unwieldy in building initial, expressive shapes: the geometry appears non-expressive as compared to the sketch. Our aim is to interactively expand the digitised two-dimensional sketches into a three-dimensional model, preserving the expressivity. Methods to achieve this must be spatial and interactive to draw on the designer's sensitivity for expressiveness, his skills at shaping forms, and his ability to exploit ambiguities. First we describe a method to make a line-of-sight reconstruction of a 2D sketch. Then we describe three Virtual Reality methods varying in degree of immersion, visual and tactile feedback, and support for natural gestures. These were evaluated against the requirements above. The most suited is developed into an application, is been fully gested against existing systems, and is currently being implemented.
