AutoErgo is a PC-based evaluation system for the ergonomic quality of the driver's place in passenger cars. The system focuses primarily on anthropometric (dimensional) and cognitive aspects. The evaluation is conducted under non-driving conditions and can be applied at several stages of the development process, to a mock-up as well as to the product of the market. AutoErgo includes more than 4100 items. The items are presented as a computerised checklist. Most of them are based on objective observations. Anthropometric tests require a sample of 4 subjects. The data can be put in directly at the site by a notebook computer. The evaluation results are automatically summarised as ergonomic indices and can be presented and printed as bar charts at different levels of detail. AutoErgo is oriented towards the detection of technical components with ergonomic deficits and can therefore be a useful tool for the automotive engineer during the iterative optimisation of car design. Tests habe proved that AutoErgo generates reproducible results.
