Regenerative braking targets an activity that causes major pollution problems: stop-start driving in urban areas. Most regenerative braking systems (RBS) studied hitherto have made use of batteries, flywheels and hydraulic accumulators. The present study has investigated the use of elastomers for such systems. The ability of elastomers to store large amounts of energy which can be recovered quickly makes them attractive materials for propulsive devices. Theoretical and experimental research, together with small scale vehicle prototyping, has produced preliminary design specifications for a full scale system that should in principle be suitable for incorporation into city vehicles. The system provides the conventional engine with supplementary power or retardation. In addition to reduced engine and brake wear, other benefits include reduced engine size: operation of the engine under its most efficient running conditions and improved efficiency from storing surplus energy. This ultimately leads to reduced fuel consumption, control of emissions and less pollution.
