Vehicle simulation is a very important part of the design and specification process for electric and hybrid vehicles and must be carroed out in prior to any hardware design and build. Here, the duty of the vehicle must be specified in terms of a reqired drive cycle and the simulation results can be used to specify the size and type of components in the powertrain. Other results which include the fuel consumption and emissions over the drive cycle can also be obtained which can be compared to either conventional or other types of hybrid vehicle. The authors describe the structure of the simulation methodology and, in particular, the three general approaches of non-feedback, cycle feedback and powertrain feedback modelling with these terms being adequately described. Particular focus is given to the modelling of series hybrid vehicles incorporating a turbogenerator and the benefits of such a powertrain are given over the alternatives. The turbogenerator series hybrid can be operated under a number of distinct control strategies and the suitability of these control startegy to particular drive cycles is described. The simulation methods are illustrated by means of two examplesare given of particular vehicles, the first being a medium sized vehicle which would be suitable as a taxi. The seciond, much larger vehicle would operate as a bus. For both these cases, the fuel consumption and toxic emissions are computed and compared with vehicles having conventional powertrains.
