Direct drive systems for electric or hybrid vehicles have advantages over the classical construction with one central machine. Mounting the motors directly to the wheels simplifies the mechanical layout. The space between the wheels is available for the interior of the car, because no axle is necesary to connect them. With the gearing discarded, room and weight of the drive system is reduced and the efficiency of the force transmission is 100 %. However, the torque required at the motor increases. Compared to conventional designs, the transverse flux machine has favourable characteristics concerning efficiency and specific torque. For this reason it is especially suited for direct drive applications. The motor described in this paper produces a nominal torque of 300 Nm, the maximum speed is 1200 rpm. The inner stator with three ring windings is water-cooled, the outer rotor carries permanent magnets. Both parts allow an easy assembly. Both magnetic circuit and mechanical construction were subject to optimisation.
