Gamma titanium aluminides based on TiAl are seen as potential replacements for superalloys and alloy steels in aerospace and automotive engine applications. Their low density, excellent fatigue properties, strength at elevated temperature and oxidation resistance, allows them to be used effectively for components such as automotive exhaust valves and turbocharger rotors. In the case of exhaust valves any reduction in weight or increase in service temperature capability leads to an increase in engine efficiency in terms of fuel economy and lower emissions. Presently the major hurdle to the use of titanium aluminides in these applications is cost effective manufacture and product durability. Cast, PM or wrought processes will allow production to near net shape however, machining will generally be required to produce the final product. The paper outlines the properties and applications of gamma titanium aluminide and covers experimental work on single point turning of HIPped Ti-45Al-2Mn-2Nb with 0.8 % vol. TiB2. Surface finish was found to be good however, tool liefe was short even when using low cutting speeds (typically < 30 m/min). Surface integrity analysis showed significant work hardening and the presence of microcracks.
