The paper describes the development and evaluation of high pressure (30 - 70 bar) gas nitriding, in ammonia and ammonia/nitrogen gas mixtures, of steel automotive components. The effect of process parameters on the structure, hardness and depth of case are described and discussed. Fast processing times and unprecedented throwing power over complex shapes and down blind, narrow holes, compared with conventional gas nitriding and plasma nitriding, are reported. Microstructural evolution and surface hardening characteristics are discussed. In the case of stainless steels, carefully selected processing conditions lead to excellent surface hardening whilst retaining a high level of corrosion resistance; the microstructural origin of this important result is explained in relation to the roles of nitride precipitation and solid solution hardening.
