Aerodynamic or wind noise is generated by the movement of air across a vehicle. Under conditions of moderate and high speeds, wind noise becomes a dominant source of annoyance to the occupants. The radio antenna has been known to be one of the major sources of wind noise and has received a fair share of attention from automobile engineers in recent times. The tonal nature of antenna wind noise is attributed to be the principal reason why it is perceived as annoying. An approach that deals with eliminating the noise at the source is the redesign of the antenna stem itself. Various manufacturers have used innovative shapes to reduce wind noise. The designs that were evaluated in this paper are (1) smooth straight cylinder (common), (2) smooth tapered cylinder, (3) tapered internal spiral groove, (4) tapered external spiral splines. The effectiveness of common redesigns has been evaluated in road tests and the results have been bolstered by laboratory tests. A binaural measurement and analysis system was used for evaluation of the antenna wind noise. Using a combination of subjective evaluations and objective analyses, the various designs were rank ordered. From a sound quality viewpoint, the presence of discrete bands in the frequency spectrum results in whistling tones that are perceived to be annoying by humans. From both the road and bench tests, it was concluded that the tapered external spiral splined design is the quietest and produces the least wind noise among the four designs evaluated.
