A study of the factors influencing overall performance and fuel consumption of a passenger car was undertaken. The study was based on the development and verification of a universal mathematial model simulating the vehicle's fuel consumption under various operating conditions. The model calculations were based on the total vehicle's aerodynamic drag, grade and rolling resistance, atmospheric conditions and other vehicle design parameters. These include engine capacity, fuel injection and ignition method, type of engine management system, fuel specification, drivetrain details (manual/automatic transmission) and total vehicle weight. The developed model was of a modular structure and was designed to run on a Pentium personal computer of a minimum 8 Megabytes of RAM. Verification of the model was achieved by comparing the predicted fuel consumption and other performance parameters with the manufacturers data of a common passenger car. An excellent quantitative agreement was obtained. The model was subsequently used to investigate the effects of various design parameters (including the vehicle's aerodynamic drag, weight, engine efficiency and gearbox design) on fuel consumption of the same car. The results clearly demonstrate the versatility and benefits of using the developed model in the early stages of the car design process.
