It has been suggested that analysis methods adopted or approved by Classification Societies should make greater allowance for the plastic response of shell plating in icebreakers. This is supported by recorded incidences of frame failure occurring without, or prior to, plate failure. Such occurrences infer that the current Rules are specifying excessive plate thicknesses and hence incurring unnecessary weight and cost penalties. The paper compares approaches to the structural analysis of midship side structure by some notable authors contributing to the subject and the corresponding scantlings which each method would produce with those of current Rules of two Classification Societies. The paper then combines aspects from each of the methods to produce an aggregate method catering for ice behaviour, load distribution, and both elastic and plastic response of the icebelt structure.
