The tentative measures of the 60000 DWT Arctic tanker under developing are: 240 m long and 37 m wide with twin screw propulsion. The design target of ice breaking capability for the tanker is to maintain a speed of 3 knots in 1.8 m thick level ice (flexural strength = 600 kPa). This paper describes the parametric series of tests performed during 1993 to 1995. Ice model tests done so far have included both in smooth level ice of different thickness and in broken ice fieldes. The test included towed resistance and propulsion tests and self-propulsion tests. Also in some of the cases self-propulsion tests running astern were carried out as well. Open water tests with the preliminary hull form were also conducted. Test results were evaluated both by ice resistance and propeller/ice interaction point of view. It was concluded that moderate hull flare angle of parallel middle body is recommendable for an arctic tanker in question. Some effects on the performance by the rudder and propulsion arrangement are also described. The paper also introduces items to be studied for further development of the 60000 DWT Arctic Tanker.
