This paper summarises the results of research into condition monitoring of railway equipment at the University of Birmingham and general experiences learnt from a number of case studies, in particular a train rotary door-operator example. The motivation and background to research into early-failure warning systems for single-throw mechanical equipment commonly used in railways is firstly introduced. This application area for condition monitoring offers new challenges with respect to continuous rotating machinery in manufacturing and utility industries. The broad framework for railway applications, that is the need for integration of remote condition monitoring with maintenance management strategies such as Reliability-Centred Maintenance, is elaborated. Requirements for a feasible and cost-effective condition monitoring solution are discussed. The paper outlines research leading to the design and development of a prototype control and monitoring system for a train-door test rig. Different elements of this novel system are described. The results so far obtained and various potential applications of such a system are briefly presented. Conclusions and possibilities for further research are finally summarised.
