Fast ferries have secured a significant place in marine transport. The degree of innovation has been remarkable. New methods of reducing resistance and weight and improving propulsive effetiveness have been developed andproven in a comparatively short space of time. In this article the development of hydrofoils, hovercrafts, surface effect ships, catamarans and monohulls in the past 50 years From an analysis of past and current trends itwould seem that the range of sizes of fast ferries will continue to increase. One suspects that fast ferries will continue to supplant conventionalro-ros for the immediate future. The increasing development of fast cargocrafts is expected. Looking yet further ahead is the intriguing prospect of WIG or wing-in-ground--effect craft
