Amadeus (advanced manipulator for deep underwater systems) is an international subsea manipulator project. The object is to improve the sampling and manipulation capabilities of underwater systems, through the development of advanced grippers and manipulator control techniques. The Amadeus gripper is a dextrous three-fingered hydraulic end-effector, utilizing flexible actuator fingers. The main function of the gripper is the collection of arbitrary submerged objects via finger-tip precision grasp. The phase 1 prototype has been developed as a freshwater laboratory system. The objective of phase 2 is to produce more robust systems offering enhanced functionality and suitability for trials in the marine enviroment. The article provides an overview of the Amadeus projekt describing the achievements of the first phase and the proposed developments for phase 2.
