Long barriers are often erected along the motorways in fronnt of residential houses and other sensitive objects in order to reduce traffic noise. The noise barrier must be high and large enough to satisfy expectations. Different methods exist for determining these quantities, among them the procedures based on DIN 18005 standards and VDI 2720 directives are the ones most frequently encountered. During the reconstruction of some motorways in Slovenia these standards were mainly used as guide lines for noise control planning. However, some environmental problems are not covered by these standards, especially as far as the improvement of the existing noise control measures is concerned. For this reason the author derived a numerical method to solve the problem of the existing noise barriers with unsatisfactory properties.
