Fire is one of the major hazards on a submarine. The extremely close proximity of fire initiators and fire fuels, combined with the sealed environment and difficulty of firefighting combine to produce a significant threat. Therefore the development and investigation of the design with respect to fire is a high priority for the submarine designer. However, fire scenarios are also extreme difficult to model for the purposes of design and formal safety analysis. This paper describes the methodology for the investigation and assessment of fires which is part of the proposed Ministry of Defense Submarine Systems Safety Criteria and Procedure. The process uses event sequences to model the fire initiators, the growth of the fire, the effect of the firefighting systems and the damage to essential submarine systems. A method for integrating the results into a whole submarine safety fault tree model is also covered.
