Automated rubber-tired people mover systems in outdoor winter environments can be subject to availability limitations because of inclement winter weather conditions. Guideway heating maximizes system availability when vehicle running surfaces are exposed to ice, snow, and frost conditions. Maximizing system availability while minimizing power consumption are the two main goals of any heating system; however, these inversely related goals are difficult to combine. These goals can be achieved through analysis, design, control, and monitoring. Implementation of the guideway heating system at the Frankfurt Airport PTS (Passenger Transfer System) is based on weather station inputs of wind speed, relative humidity, ambient temperature and precipitation which are used to establish a conservative operating heating power level. Independent verification of a minimum level of heating is provided by monitoring embedded temperature sensors. The proper operation of all other heating circuits is by correlation of electrical current level in all circuits.
