The present paper reports the development of capabilities for probabilistic fatigue reliability assessment in the presence of various categories of uncertainties. First, the development of some selected (five) fatigue damage models for broad-band random stresses is presented. These models are based on the Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation rule utilized in conjunction with S-N curves. The models are implemented within a computer code (VASFATT) for fatigue damage estimation and extremal analysis under stationary random stresses developed at Martec. Secondly, a reliability model for fatigue crack initiation based on the above damage models is described. This model was implemented in the general purpose reliability analysis software package COMPASS, also developed at Martec. Reliability and probabilistic sensitivity analysis results based on advanced (Level III) probability integration algorithms are presented. The methodology reported herein is recommended as a viable strategy for the fatigue durability assessment of marine structures, and for making more realistic and cost-effective maintenance management decisions.
