To demonstrate the advantageous potential of ceramic gas turbines for automotive use, the 7-year research and development programme conducted by the Petroleum Energy Centre in Japan, is under way. The basic engine is a 100 kW, single-shaft regenerative engine having a turbine inlet temperature of 1350 deg C and a rotor speed of 110000 rpm. The engine components were designed, experimentally evaluated and improved in the idividual and various assembly test rigs, and an assembly test including rotating and stationary compononents was performed under the condition of turbine inlet temperature of 1200 deg C.
