The paper presents the latest developments of FILMTEC membranes and elements which have been successfully completed up to their introduction in the market. These developments include several different membranes types used in water treatment as SWRO (seawater reverse osmosis) BWRO (brackish water reverse osmosis). The new membrane elements make possible the economic use of RO membranes into larger water purification applications previously not considered economically viable. These membranes combine a higher flux efficiency with a larger area packaged in the same volume and format as conventional 8 inch elements allowing for a substancial reduction of investment costs, as wall as lower operating costs due to reduced pressure and fouling tendency. In the case of the low energy consuming elements, the part of the operating cost related to energy consumption has been roughly reduced by 30 % to 50 % compared with conventional RO technology. The lower energy consumption of up to 20 % in seawater RO and up to 50 % in brackish water RO for the new FILMTEC membrane elements vs. conventional products does not only mean very large savings in investment and operational cost, but they mean also a significant reduction in the already low environmental impact of RO technology. Other than this, the new membrane elements have excellent specification characteristics which are even improved in the practical reality. With this, they become an excellent choise for numerous new applications and retrofit actions.
