Collecting experimental emissions data from alternative fuels vehicles is a costly endeavor. If it could be demonstrated that emissions trends can be predicted using combustion models via computer simulations, this should reduce the costs of field tests significantly. The objective of this work is to show that emissions from a light duty engine can be predicted using a fairly simple model with a high degree of confidence provided that a few measured data points are available for calibration. The role of the model than is to fill in the gaps in measurements and study emission trends over a wide range of combustion and engine parameters. A zero-dimensional model is used to predict emissions, specifically CO, CO2, NOx, and hydrocarbons, from a Saturn 1.9L, 4 cylinder 16 valves engine. The engine is fueled with two alternative fuels, namely, natural gas and propane. The predicted emissions from the engine when fueled with natural gas are compared to experimental data obtained from the same engine at West Virginia University. The influence of two different flame models is also investigated.
