The paper outlines the method Perkins use to determine the combustion noise of a diesel engine. Using this method a relationship between the Cetane Number of diesel gas oil and the combustion noise was established for a Perkins 3.86 litre diesel engine. The combustion induced mechanical noise of an engine, with different fuel Cetane Numbers, was also investigated. The combustion noise obtained with various alternative fuels, including vegetable oils, is also documented. The differences in the fuel Parameters and the associated combustion noise are discussed.
