Accurate prediction of ship maneuverability is necessary for ship hull designs to meet ship maneuverability standards. Maneuverability has been predicted based on empirical hydrodynamic coefficients that use the pricipal hull dimensions. Hydrodynamic coefficients for recent ships are different from those of conventional ships due to improvements of the hull shape, making is difficult to predict these coefficients by using only the pricipal dimensions. Therefore, model tests of recent ships were performed to obtain their hydrodynamic coefficients. A new prediction procedure was then developed based on these data. The accuracy of predictions uisng the new procedure was confirmed by comparing them with the results of sea trial results for a 150,000 DWT (150 T) tanker.
