This paper describes a prototype of an aircraft taxi guidance system currently under development and test at Daimler-Benz Aerospace NFS GmbH. This system, being part of an Advanced Flight Management System (AFMS), is aimed at assisting the pilot crew during taxiing by offering a map of the airport on a display with the present position of the aircraft marked and the cleared taxiways displayed by conspicuous colour. The integration of this onboard taxi guidance functionality in the overall Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (SMGCS) concept is outlined. In the main part of this paper the aircraft taxi guidance system is presented in more detail. This description covers the overall system approach, the system architecture, the airport database, the position determination requirements, the map presentation on a display in the cockpit, the editing capabilities for the pilot crew and the alerting capabilities of the system.
