This work offers an approach to analyze the fatigue performance of landing gear of light (single-engine general aviation) aircraft when landing, taking off, or taxiing. Randomness in various properties is taken into account in addition to the random surface profile. The system is modeled as a linear, single degree of freedom, nonstationary vibrating system with random loading and random, time-varying properties; this type of vibration is sometimes referred to as random parametric vibration. This problem is difficult to solve using conventional techniques. The recently-developed random matrix method, which uses the Neumann expansion to obtain statistics of the inverse of a random matrix in terms of the statistics of the elements in the original matrix, is a good technique to use for this problem. Other details of the proposed technique are presented.
