This paper gives an overview of some recent trends and advances in the sheet metal forming simulation. It examines ways to expand it into a global industrial virtual prototyping technology, that includes traditional punch and die stamping, elastometric cushion forming, pressure/blow forming processes, superplastic forming application and the thermoplastic forming of carpetand fibre reinforced matrix stacked sheets. The paper also highlights the major achievements in this field from an industrial perspective such as streamlining the simulation process, especially the automatic meshing and the drawbead calibration. The development the above new capabilities has lead to cuts in cost and lead-times in the overall stamping simulation process, resulting in sunstantional improvement in predictive prototyping technology.
