This paper outlines the use of Multibody System Analysis as a computer simulation tool for vehicle designers. Examples are based on the ADAMS (Automatic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) program with emphasis on the simulation and prediction of vehicle handling performance. ADAMS is widely used within the automotive industry to model and analyse the performance of individual suspension systems. Models which attempt to represent detailed linkage and bush data can become complicated when extended to full vehicle models used to predict handling. In order to investigate the influence of model complexity on the accuracy of handling simulations a range of different modelling approaches have been used to represent the suspension systems of a modern saloon vehicle. Studies have been carried out where the complexity of the models have been varied to include simple models such as those where the suspension are represented by sliding masses, a vehicle model where the suspensions are modelled as swing arms, and a vehicle model based on roll stiffness. In addition a model has been generated which includes all the suspension linkages and is as close as possible to the actual vehicle. Within this paper the use of a simplified model based on roll stiffness is discussed and compared with a detailed model including all the linkages. The handling simulations presented here are for an extreme transient lane change manouvre using fixed steering inputs measured from the actual vehicle during test track trials. The results for the simple model based on roll stiffness are compared with those for the detailed linkage model. For both models the results were compared with the instrumented vehicle test data to establish the influence of model complexity on handling simulation accuracy.
