Cars should no longer be developed on the assumption that they are alone on the road. It is therefore of great importance that velocity profiles which take the traffic flow into account should also be used as input data for driveline simulations in addition to standard cycles like the highway driving cycle. As the result of simulations are influenced by the velocity profiles, this means they also influence the design of the product itself. One way of getting such a more realistic velocity profile is to use traffic flow simulation tools. The Institute's traffic simulation program VERSIMA will be described in this paper. One chapter is focused on the Institute's modular driveline simulation program FASIMA II which enables the dynamic behaviour of any kind of driveline to be evaluated. For that purpose, there has to be a model not only of the driveline but also of the driveline control. The simulation focuses on the fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, driving performance and load characteristics. Different configurations of hybrid vehicles have been examined in cooperation with car manufacturers. Each configuration has advantages and disadvantages. Some examples of the simulation results concerning hybrid vehicles will be presented to show the high efficiency of simulation techniques in the evaluation of the car behaviour. As an example the results of a test carried out on a compact middle-class vehicle are presented. The standard version of a five-gear manual transmision vehicle was compared to a hybrid version, whereby it was shown that using the hybrid driveline does not necessarily lead to lower fuel consumption.
