Automotive cushions have been evaluated in a real-life sever duty scenario using urban Police Cruisers as test vehicles. Polyurethane foam cushions manufactured via commercial production process and custom formulated in the laboratory were subjected to the equivalent of one vehicle lifetime (160000 km). After over 2000 hours of ride evaluation, these cushions were then evaluated in the laboratory and their resultant physical properties compared with virgin foam physical properties. Over the period of testing these properties are virtually unchanged from those determined originally and indeed some inprovement was found. We have evaluated several different grades of TDI-based foam, MDI-based foam and TDI-based foam containing about 20 percent of recycled polyol content. All of these foams performed well in our fleet durability testing and were considered to offer a good degree of support and comfort during use. These foam cushions were disassembled from the seat assembly for final physical property evaluation. In contrast, cushions manufactured from fibrous materials both natural and synthetic failed in the field and had to be removed from the test fleet due to unacceptable performance prior to the completion of one vehicle lifetime. Polyurethane foam cushioning has proved to be the most durable seating medium even in very high-use vehicles.
