Little or no research has been carried out on the weld repair of aluminium alloy wheels. This report seeks to remedy the situation by reporting on an investigation of weld repairs made on heat treated cast aluminium alloy car wheels and a previously repaired forged aluminium alloy truck wheel. The mechanical and metallurgical properties of the cast wheel in the as-welded oondition and after post-weld heat treatment are compared with the properties of the original wheel. lt is shown that a significant reduction in mechanical properties occurs in the HAZ of the as-welded wheel due to over-aging of the alloy. lt is also shown that recovery of the properties of the weld zone is possible with post-weld heat treatment. Material analysis was performed on the repaired truck wheel to identify both its alloy type and the welding process used to repair the Wheel. lt is shown that both the wheel and the filler metal used to repair the wheel were a 5xxxx-series aluminium alloy. The mechanical and metallurgical properties of the weld repaired wheel is compared with the properties of the original wheel. lt was found that a significant loss in mechanical properties occurs in the HAZ of the weld repair due to recovery of the weld-heated parent metal.
