Silicon carbide and sandwich technology have been selected as interesting candidates on order to reach the high performance needed by large telescope mirrors. Aerospatiale has gained from previous programmes an extensive background on design and development of telescope mirrors and also in SiC chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The experience in SiC-CVD, which has been demonstrated on large industrial parts (up to 1 m) is based on process modelling which allows to get very good homogeneous thickness deposit. Thanks to this experience and to availability of industrial facilities (up to 2.5 m), the development of an all silicon carbide sandwich concept has been started. Mechanical analyses performed on this type of solution show a strong decrease of the deformations induced by gravity and interface instabilities compared to other classical open-back structure performance. Preliminary manufacturing feasibility is demonstrated and characterization is in progress.
