The increased use of aluminium alloys in car production and the progress in high-pressure diecasting technique challenged the company to develop an aluminium cast alloy for casting with highest quality requirements like suspension parts or safety parts in automotive body constructions. The desired requirements were reached by designing a low iron (less than 0.13 wt.%) aluminium silicon alloy with excellent castability that does not solder to the die. This paper informs of mechanical and dynamic properties as a function of chemical composition and heat treatment. Microstructure and properties were compared to standard cast alloys. Up till now, this alloy is used to make all the cast nodes of the AUDI A8 body structure. Experience with the manufacture of the diecasting like casting technique, casting parameters, heat treatment, service life of the dies and test methods and results were discussed.
