struck car. During the collision the vehicle is subjected to a forward acceleration and the car occupants are pushed forwards. The head lags behind to its inertia. Research data indicate that the neck injuries take place, when the 'S-shape ' of the cervical spine is passed, if the motions fast enough. Different factors have been suggested that can influence the risk of sustaining neck injuries in rear impacts. These includes the distance between the head and the head restraint, the stiffness properties of the seat and the car rear structure. Two car models, an Opel Corsa and a Peugeot 205, were chosen for low speed (20 km/h) rear impacts with the mobil barriere in the first part of this study. The second part of the study was to evaluate some new principles for a design of a car seat, where the objective was to minimize the motion between the lower and the upper end of the cervical spine, before the (critical) 'S-shape' of the neck is completed, and to compare this seat with the Opel Corsa and Peugeot 205 seat and a 'strong' standard car seat with a fixed head-rest. It was found that the neck motions were different in both proved cars.
